Generation neXtNurtured on home computers, videogames, satellite television, Internet access, and Macdonaldís milk shakes This year the LAS autumn lecture series is based around the idea of Generation X or what we have labeled ‘Generation neXt’. This is simply a reference to a generation of children that have now matured into their 30's and 40’s (still considered as a relative youngster in architectural terms). What must be considered in order to give this lecture series some context is that none of the guests giving lectures over the coming months are old enough to have seen Neil Armstrong walk on the moon, but they can remember the challenger shuttle explosion (1986). Similarly all our guest lecturers’ experiences have been shaped by events unique to their formative years, events such as the fall of the Berlin wall, Desert Storm, the melting of polar ice caps and the hole in the ozone layer. They represent the first generation to grow up with home computers, videogames, satellite television, Internet access and Macdonald’s milk shakes. This is a generation of architects whose peers have created Dot.com empires over night, changing the world forever. Not wanting to categorise with the usual ism’s, try to think of this lecture series as a group of architects that could be the illegitimate children of Peter Zumthor (born 1943) or Rem Koolhaas (born 1944).
