The Church of Our Lady and St Nicholas

Designer: Thomas Harrison (tower)
Built: 1811 - 1815
Location: At junction between the Strand and Chapel Street

This is the parish church of Liverpool and, as St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, is often known as the sailors church. The tower is the oldest part of the church as body of the church, built in the 14th century was destroyed in the last war. The tower was designed by Thomas Harrison , and built in 1811-15, replacing an earlier tower with a spire which collapsed in 1810 killing 25 people. The present tower is a good example of early Gothic revival with flying buttresses supporting a graceful open lantern, surmounted by a ship weather vane.
