The Tower Building

Designer: W Aubrey Thomas
Built: 1908
Location: The Strand, between St Nicholas Church and Water Street

On the corner of Water Street stands Tower Buildings, designed by W Aubrey Thomas, the architect of the Liver Building. This building predates by two years. It is similarly inventive and, built in 1908, is one of the earliest steel frame buildings in the country. It could be said that it lacks any architectural refinements, the designer appearing to be more concerned with the functional requirements of good lighting through larger windows and a self-cleaning glazed white tile exterior, although this could also be taken as a conscious break away from the use of ornament. The building takes its name from its site which was the original site of the Tower of Liverpool, a fortified house which stood on the river bank and belonged to the Stanley family. The crenellated turrets are an illusion to the original tower. After a period of family use, the Tower became a debtors gaol.
