Town Hall

Designer: John Wood
Built: 1749 - 1754
Location: Northern end of Castle Street

The present Town Hall is the third to stand on this site. Designed by John Wood of Bath and built in 1749-54, the original intention was that the ground floor would be an meeting place and exchange for the merchants of the city. Municipal functions would be carried out on the floors above. Seriously damaged by fire in 1795, the dome and drum were added by James Wyatt. Later, with John Foster, he added the two storey Corinthian portico on the front. The interiors were not finished until 1820, today they are recognised as being an exceptionally fine example of late Georgian decoration. The building forms a suitably civic end to Castle Street when viewed from Derby Square.
