Sessions House

Designer: F and G Holme
Built: 1884
Location: William Brown Street

This row of buildings is, together with St George's hall, recognised as one of the most important grouping of civic buildings in the UK. From the top, there is the Sessions House, the Walker Art Gallery, the Picton Reading Room, the William Brown Library and the College of Technology.

Opened in 1884, this stone Sessions House building in a free Classical style was designed by F and G Holme. It consists of a five bay front with a portico of four paired Corinthian columns and a high enriched parapet. The coat of arms located on the pediment is that of Lancashire County Council. The interior includes a charming Italian Renaissance staircase. Although considered too ornate for some, it is a fine termination to this row of civic buildings.
