Picton Reading Room

Built: 1875 - 1879
Location: William Brown Street

Sir James Picton, at the time the president of the Libraries and Museums Committee laid the foundation stone for the Reading Room in 1875 and the building opened in 1879. The Hornby Library, designed by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. The Reading Room acts as a valuable civic design function by acting as a pivot to William Brown Street and Islington which are at an angle to each other. Nicknamed 'Picton's Gasometer' when it opened, the reading room was the first building in Liverpool to have electric lighting.
