William Brown Library and Museum

Built: 1860
Location: William Brown Street

(Now the Liverpool Central Library and Museum)Designed in stone by Thomas Allom the library opened in 1860,and was subsequently modified by John Weightman, the Corporation Architect. It was damaged in the Second World War and was reconstructed with some additions of debatable quality. It has a portico of six Corinthian columns with a pediment modelled on south side of St George's Hall. Originally built to house the Earl of Derby's natural history collection, the project caused some controversy and a wealthy merchant, William Brown came forward and offered to defray the cost.
