LIVERPOOL WATERFRONT ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL 15-26 JUNE 2010

As part of the RIBA NW Architecture Festival, this series of events will celebrate and explore the famous waterfront architecture of Liverpool.

 W  ARCHITECTURE WALKING TOURS

Walking tours will be led by local architects and students of architecture, lasting between 60-90 minutes. We’ll explore the waterfront and commercial district from an architectural viewpoint - taking in the best of the city’s historical and contemporary architecture.

 L  LIVER BIRD TRAIL

Join tour guide Julie Kershaw to discover the many and not so obvious Liver Birds that adorn the waterfront buildings.

 B  OPEN BUILDING TOURS

The Mersey Tunnel [with Merseytravel]. A unique behind the scenes guided tour of Queensway Tunnel which is an engineering masterpiece. Please wear sensible shoes and warm clothing. Not suitable for those with breathing or walking difficulties or children under 10. Free - places are strictly limited and need to be reserved in advance.

Martins Bank Building. A monumental office building by Herbert Rowse, for the principal regionally based bank in Liverpool, contains grand central banking hall on the ground fl oor and a bizarre neo-gothic boardroom at roof level. Free - places are strictly limited and need to be reserved in advance.

Liverpool’s Old Dock. See a large portion of the Old Dock rising more than 20 feet from the bed of the Pool which is clearly visible. The impressive walls are made from hand-made bricks. Free - places are strictly limited and need to be reserved in advance.

 T  ARCHITECTURE TALKS

Lumière & The Overhead Railway. Dr Richard Koeck will present the latest fascinating research into the fi lms shot by Alexandre Promio in 1897. [Martime Museum]

The new Museum of Liverpool. Julia Bryan will give an overview of the exciting new waterfront museum.

Waterfront Archaeology. Sarah-Jane Farr will talk about the changing waterfront landscape and what was found beneath the new waterfront developments.

Mann Island. Architect Matt Brook (Broadway Malyan) will discuss how this new dramatic watefront scheme was designed and constructed.

Architecture:Culture:Cities Former TATE Director of Estates Peter Wilson will talk about the role of culture in regeneration and provide a background to the construction of several TATE galleries.
